Fake website tempts American investors
In the United States, an internet-based campaign to warn people about
stock market scams drew 125,000 hits in two days using fake offers.
It began with the publication of a fake press release praising a biological defence
firm - McWhortle Enterprises. The release invited interested parties to browse further
information - including glowing testimony from fictional analysts - via a special website.
In fact, the US Securities and Exchange Commission had set up this website.
The address is http://www.mcwhortle.com/
Those tempted to invest received a warning not to be so hasty. The on-screen message read:
"If you responded to an investment idea like this you could get scammed!"
Another warning website set up by a Government department was the
ASIC's April Fool's Day fake website where they convinced 233 investors to
part with more than $4 million over the internet
